For most of the nation that fateful day the nation was peaceful and quite with regular daily life going on as normal. Most experienced a crisp summer to fall day of weather. The clock ticked on. Schools just started, the clock ticked and ticked. Tick, Tick, Tick like a heavy heartbeat.
8:46 a.m. Eastern Time came, fifteen minute before 9 o’clock. The longest minutes in human history that changed the world as we will forever know it. American Airlines Flight 11 well off course of its destination struck World Trade Center's North Tower and then just some 20 minutes later at 9.03am World Trade Center's South Tower was struck by American Airlines Flight 77. Time just stood still as New Yorkers were hit with massive shell-shock like no other.
As the bravest of the brave FDNY & NYPD along with New York’s Port Authority instantaneously responded to both World Trade Towers in the largest rescue mission in Manhattan’s history. Even as the smoke billowed from the upper floors of the massive skyscrapers men with unimaginative bravery rushed upward not expecting to be blocked form offering salvation to those trapped above. As the officials of both FDNY & NYPD set up command bases at the foot of the complex in both entries to both towers the unimaginative and unfathomable happened. The people trapped above seeing no relief and no rescue in sight hanging out those windows plummeted from above to their deaths. As each body crashed below on vehicles and on top of walkway coverings the sounds of each became emotionally terrifying.
At 9:58:59: The South Tower of the World Trade Center collapses, 56 minutes after the impacted then at 10:28:25: The North Tower of the World Trade Center collapses, 1 hour and 42 minutes after the impact. As whatever numbers of that could ran for their lives to escape the falling collapsed debris. Many rushed inside in nearby stores and other buildings.
Knowing that there were many that were trapped or crushed to death beneath the mountain of rubble even more heroes showed up to assist immediately. Some retired FDNY & NYPD rushed in to help (Actor Steve Buscemi was one that reported to his former firehouse for duty).
Meanwhile states away in Virginia and Washington, D.C. was put on high alert as reports came in of another hijacked paned heading into highly restricted airspace. The U. S. Capitol Building was evacuated in a rush, other departments and agencies either sheltered in place or evacuated as well. The most fortified building of military strength was then suddenly impacted at 9:37:46: Flight 77 crashes into the western side of The Pentagon. Then moments later reports came at 10:03:11: Flight 93 is crashed by its hijackers in a field in the rural area of Shanksville, PA near southeast of Pittsburgh in Somerset County.
The lives of many were forever changed that day. Many lives were lost. One man stood above all men as the leader of the rescue operation. His name is Battalion Chief Joseph W. Pfeifer. In a very limited capacity he along with his men of the FDNY joined up with the men of the NYPD, and New York Port Authority and did what they could do to save people’s lives that day before the WTC Complex Building came crashing down.
Those brave men showed selflessness in ways that cannot be ever duplicated. The 343 of the FDNY, 23 NYPD, 37 NY Port Authority gave all that day. Total number killed in attacks in New York: 2,753 are the souls lost that day in New York City. Number of families who got no remains: 1,717. Our memories shall be forever filled with the ashes of the dearly departed. To those families the memories of your loved ones will never be forgotten. Your enduring pain is our enduring pain.
“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends”

Let us bow our heads and humble our hearts,
Almighty God in Heaven,
We pause this day of September 11th to remember those lives lost and those who gave all to save lives. Our hearts are heavy, our minds submit in reverent honor holding the hands of those dearly beloved families left behind. In selfless service and sacrifice there is great honor above all merit. The love that is shown to others is that shinning light that cannot be dimmed. The tragedy that was experienced and the horrors of that day shall never be forgotten. How can all of it ever be? The comfort in God our Heavenly Father is the only way we can make it through days of remembrance like these and many other times of grief and heartache. Though our hearts broken we have a refuge to run to and to cling to in the arms of our Savior Jesus Christ. Our hope for a better day is in His words and the grace that He showed to us all. We find ourselves looking to others and listening to others this day in reflection of what happened some 22 years ago. For our mind’s sake it is all we have in our physical condition of support emotionally. Let ourselves grant each other the time and the support that we each need. Let ourselves seek after that of which can be only given to us by our Creator God and that is true peace of mind and in our hearts. Let us embrace His arms of love so that our souls find solace in this our time of remembrance. Our Heavenly Father, touch upon us all your wisdom and all understanding. Guide us with your light and love. Be our way-maker in our lives. Pour out your blessings upon us all and our nation. Give grace and comfort to those families once again that are still grieving so many years later. We seek you and not ourselves in our times of need.
In all things we pray, we pray this prayer in your holy Son’s beloved name Yeshua Jesus Christ…AMEN!
The Last Alarm, The Last Bell Tolls for those who gave all that fateful and tragic day.
