The last time we left off we went over the types of Correctional Officers. Now lets talk about the mentality and the changes that will be made in the minds of the Officers. If you have not read that one, the link is below. Please read that one first. ⬇️
No matter the person coming into Corrections they will be changed forever. You will never think the same again. You will look at all people in a different light. You will learn verbal codes of communication and behavioral codes of conduct that you will see come out in what Officers and Inmates call ‘Free Folk’ (this is people out in the world not locked up). If you have a family, the ways in which you manage your household will blend over into the way you manage Inmates and vice-versa; the key of caution is not to get wrapped up into the mentality that these Inmates are your own children and start treating them like so. If you allow yourself to get caught up in that you will be either THE SOFTY or THE JOHN WAYNE depending on how you have raised your own children. Either way has devastating consequences. THE FIRM BUT FAIR is exactly where you want to be in both Family and Work-life. That’s your ‘Safe Zone’ and you will survive both your own children and those Inmates.
Corrections is a world of its own and has many aspects that will be forever seared into your brain. Many times you will see things that will utterly disgust you or make you so furious. The daily life working in Corrections will drain you and will cause mental fatigue, it will also cause health problems (night-shift Officers have the most health problems). Depending upon the State, your facility may allow for smoking and dipping of tobacco; this will become you if you have serious never problems and mental stress levels. Personally, I recommend going to vaping. In the prior sentence, your diet will change due to how much and the containers to which you are allowed to bring in per both Department and Facility Regulations. Some, not all Prison Food is good. Most Non-Dietary Meals are high in salt, fats, and starches. There’s a reason why oat meal is called ‘shit-on-a shank’ in prison (you’re fresh out of luck for brown sugar, cinnamon, or fresh fruit).
12 Hour Shift Work will indeed put a strain on relationship and will lead to break-ups, separations, and even divorce among Corrections Officers. You will be basically working half of a years in total hours. You will be working plenty of holidays and getting personal time off is very limited. Vacations? They only come one week a year; that’s if you can get it scheduled. You will learn what F.M.L.A. (Family Medical Leave Act) is all about and how to properly use it among the fellow brother and sister officers. If you are a Single Parent, God Bless you going into Corrections as an Officer. If you do not have an extended family support network ready to help you out it will be tough if not impossible for you to fulfill this Job’s Duties. In the case of the TYPES OF CORRECTIONS OFFICER, suicide is highly known to follow THE SOFTY because of what was spoken of in the layout of that Officer Characteristics, need I say more. In the case of THE JOHN WAYNE, this type of officer can lead to one being taken to jail and the additional stress and turmoil on any family and relationship will surmount. It is best if you have a strong support network of family, friends, and other loved ones to ease tensions and stresses around you. Communication at home is very important. Faith (Religion) is the most important; with prayer in your life and support spiritually from God/Jesus Himself you will make it through. If you ever need any other support there are plenty of means out there. See Below:
Counseling & Help at your finger tips… https://patriotlayministries.substack.com/s/counseling-and-help
Prison riots to Deaths in Prisons, you will witness things that will effect you mentally and spiritually to the point of developing over time what’s known as P.T.S.D. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (aka Shell-shock). If you are in Corrections and you have the slightest of hints that you may have this please seek help and attention soon. The sooner the better because it’s not only you that will suffer in the end and throughout but others around you such as your family, friends, and other loved-ones. If you are not in Corrections and you have friends and family that are please be aware of this and do not add fuel to the already burning fire inside of these Men and Women that are.
🚨 NOTE: IF YOU ARE A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER THIS ALSO APPLIES TO YOU AS WELL.
It’s not only those that are in the Military that suffer from this but Corrections, Law Enforcement, Fire Fighting, Emergency Medical Services, and Medical Personnel as well. Governments at all levels need to be made fully aware of this and all Judges ought to be properly educated on this very subject matter. The need for Faith Based & Mental Health Counseling for these sectors of service is very highly needed at the localized facility level.
How corrections officers can recognize PTSD
[ C1 - CORRECTIONS ONE ] The diagnostic criteria for PTSD must include a clearly identified trigger such as the threat of death, serious injury, or sexual violation. This is in contrast to other stress-induced conditions like cumulative stress or critical incident stress. Cumulative stress is a buildup of what might be called micro-insults.

[ SLU SAINT LOUIS UNIVERISTY ] SLU Study Finds Jail Corrections Officers Suffer from PTSD by Nancy Solomon on 06/12/2019 More than half of jail correctional officers screen high for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which can be predicted by job burnout, Saint Louis University research found. The research was published recently in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
