PREFACE: Why was the American Front Porch Eradicated from Society? Is there a ‘Conspiracy" behind it? We’ll examine the history leading up to and the after-effects of the missing American Front Porch.
Most ‘New Home’ construction in America today have many designs but the one key copy-cat design is the lack of a traditional front porch with a swing and plenty of room for chairs, rockers, and benches to sit on.
Here’s an example of New Home construction in America today.
From the early part of the 20th. Century America used to have front porch conversations with neighbors and enjoy family time outside. When it was cool enough to withstand the temperatures Americans of all walks of life enjoyed a cold glass of sweet iced tea or lemonade while enjoying swinging on the front porch.
This way of life started to disappear around the later half of the 1980s when New Home construction eliminated the use of a front porch. The adoption of city-style homes with only steps and a hand-rail leading up to the front door was a major adaptation and blueprint for new homes.
Before the invention of air conditioning American’s used to have meals together outside on the front porch and used to entertain on the front porch as well with a fine wine and music. In this photo below you can see multiple houses with the same style of front porch that offered each family the opportunity to strike up conversations on one city block.
No matter where you lived in America, the front porch offered a place for music and entertainment, good entertainment that is. You did not have to worry about deviant and immoral messages like we do today.
Country Music Legend & Artist Tracy Lawerence made a Hit Song titled “If The World Had A Front Porch” (1994) Video below is for your enjoyment.
Comedian James Gregory is right about not having a front porch.
When the Family does not come together and does not have a meeting place outside where others in the neighborhood can interact this is when society breaks down and people recluse back into the inner walls of one’s own house; a society gets what’s coming.
”As architectural features, front porches have been making a comeback over the last decade. About 65 percent of new-construction single-family homes included a front porch in 2018, according to the National Association of Home Builders. It’s on the top-ten list of features millennials want most in a house, with 44 percent calling it desirable and 34 percent essential. One survey found that 46 percent of new home buyers will pay up to $10,000 extra for a wraparound porch.” [A] [B]

The gradual return of the front porch seems to be on the rise in some areas of America. This is a good thing.
127 years ago the front porch was developed, that’s how long it has been. “Porch” just meant an entryway with a covering. This was the invention of the Greek Culture that was first brought to England/Great Britain, then to the United States. [D] [E]
"The twilight was blurred and soft. Supper was almost ready and the smell of cabbage floated to them from the open hall. All of them were together except Hazel, who had not come home from work, and Etta, who still lay sick in bed. Their Dad leaned back in the chair with his sock-feet on the bannisters. Bill was on the steps with the kids. Their Mama sat on the swing fanning herself with the newspaper. Across the street a girl in the neighborhood skated up and down the sidewalk on one roller skate. The lights on the block were just beginning to be turned on, and far away a man was calling someone." -- From McCullers, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, in Out on the Porch [F]
One thing is for certain, we did not have to worry about crime when America truly enjoyed the Front Porch and was a real community of people who looked after each other. We did not have to worry about having a police force the size of an army. We did not have to worry about our children getting kidnapped and trafficked. When America truly loved each other enough to look after each other’s children and property we had the America we all dreamed about. Having that taken away because of economics and building codes, and other devices…and yes people with alternate theories of reality and motivated agendas has gotten us where we are at today in 2022.
Thankfully we have a resurgence and a revival of sorts to bring back THE ICON OF AMERICANA, The Front Porch.
Conclusion: Was there a ‘Conspiracy’? In all practicality, maybe. Logically by having the Front Porch eliminated, yes. Can we prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that would hold up in a real court of law? Not so much. One thing we do know is that the America that we all grew up in truly and certainly changed with it’s elimination form Blueprints and Building Codes.
I leave you with these lyrics of Tracy Lawrence; (All credit to Tracy Lawrence) [G]
If the world had a front porch like we did back then
We'd still have our problems but we'd all be friends
Treatin' your neighbor like he's your next of kin
Wouldn't be gone with the wind
If the world had a front porch like we did back then

Beautifully stated and perfect examples in pictoria of America as many remember her.
Fantastic opinion writing and square onto of the topic.
Bravo! 😎👊🔥
My great-aunt had a long front porch and a smaller side porch on her house that her husband built. The long porch was a gathering place that had a great atmosphere. Grandaddy, cousins, aunts, uncles, friends...a good place to socialize. The house is long gone, but the live oaks are still there to remind me of times I cherish now. Memories of people and their words on that porch.
